About This Episode

A small household task that never gets done can take up more room in a marriage than anything large. In this episode, Blaze explores why those arguments repeat for years without resolving, and finds that the two people aren’t having the same conversation. One is asking a question about meaning. The other is defending against a question about character.

Drawing on Willcutt and colleagues’ meta-analysis of executive function in ADHD, the episode explains where the gap actually sits: not in wanting, not in understanding, but in the moment of starting. Which means a sincere agreement on Sunday and an unstarted task on Tuesday can both be true, and the second is not evidence about the first. It also names the loop nobody designed, in which a task becomes harder to start because it has become the argument.

Through an individual story and a couple story, listeners are offered a way out that does not require settling the can’t-or-won’t question, which is not answerable from outside a person’s head, and often not from inside it either. The partner who has been asking is not asked to expect less. She is offered something better to do with the hour.

One Emotional Takeaway

“The agreement was sincere, and the task didn’t get started. The second one is not evidence about the first.”
