About This Episode

The same ordinary day can cost two people very different amounts, and the expensive one is usually invisible, including to the person paying it. In this episode, Blaze looks at why self-reporting capacity is genuinely unreliable for many neurodivergent adults, and what happens in a household when one partner quietly begins forecasting for the other.

The mechanism has two layers: a gap between the signal the body sends and the read of that signal, which tends to run optimistic; and a second gap between having an internal state and being able to name it, which is why “fine” is so often the answer. Together they produce a person who cannot report their own capacity, and a partner who starts tracking it for them.

Through an individual story and a couple story, this episode holds both sides: the shame of being managed, and the slow disappearance of the person doing the managing. The way out isn’t more effort. It’s moving the forecast out of one person’s head and into something both people can see.

One Emotional Takeaway

“You’re working from a gauge that says full until it says empty. That’s not carelessness about your limits.”
