About This Episode
A cleared weekend that changes nothing is one of the most demoralizing experiences a neurodivergent adult can have, because the conclusion it invites is that something is wrong at a level rest cannot reach. In this episode, Blaze separates two things ordinary language treats as one: rest, the absence of activity, and recovery, the reduction of demand.
Demand turns out to be a far wider category than activity: anticipated events, unmade decisions, sensory load, and the low-level social presentation that continues at home. Drawing on Raymaker and colleagues’ community-defined description of autistic burnout, the episode also names the second error, which is the unit. That work describes recovery in weeks and months, so nine days measured against three years of accumulation will always read as failure.
Through an individual story and a couple story, the episode holds both people: the one apologizing for a holiday that didn’t work, and the one who cleared it and found the result frightening. What changes is not a better holiday. It is finding out what was still running, and budgeting the week after as part of the week.
One Emotional Takeaway
“You didn’t waste the time off. You applied an input that doesn’t do the job, because it’s the input everybody told you to apply.”
